36 hurt in clashes

SRINAGAR, July 20: At least 36 persons including 14 cops were injured after massive clashes raged at Zainapora area of Shopian district against death of a minor girl who was hit by an Army vehicle. Police seized the vehicle and arrested the driver.
A police officer said that in an incident of alleged reckless driving, an Army vehicle crushed to death a minor girl namely Aruba Jan in Aglar area of Zainapora in Shopian. The incident triggered massive demonstrations in the area and the angry youth vandalized offices of Sub Divisional Magistrate and Tehsildar Zainapora.
In a bid to pacify the protesters, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shopian Ifrooz Ahmad reached the spot. He assured them that appropriate action would be taken in this regard. The protesters were demanding filing of an FIR against the troopers of Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles.
On the occasion, some youths pelted stones on security forces who retaliated by firing teargas and pellets. At least 22 protesters sustained injuries in the clashes, 11 of them were hit by pellets while 14 cops were also hurt. Police said it exercised maximum restraint while dealing with angry protesters.
Meanwhile, police have lodged a case FIR number 41/2017 under Section 279-304 A in police station Zainapora against the Army of 55 RR. The police have also detained the driver and seized the vehicle involved in the “accident”. The situation in the area remained tense till late in the evening and the slain girl was laid to rest amid sobs and tears.
