NEW DELHI, July 10:
Even as her role in the recently-released ‘Ranjhana’ is winning accolades from audiences as well as critics, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor will this week be seen in another path breaking film, one based on the life of India’s Legendary sprinter Milkha Singh.
For Sonam, being a part of ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, which has been directed by Rakeysh Mehra (of ‘Rang De Basanti’ fame) is a special feeling for several reasons.
“I am really proud to be a part of ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. Being a part of ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ is really special since it is an inspirational story. Moreover, it is being directed by Rakeysh Mehra, with whom I earlier worked in ‘Delhi 6’. I love working with Rakeysh. So, I am really excited about the film and looking forward to the response of the audiences,”
Sonam, who was in Delhi for the premier of the film, told UNI in an interview.
‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, which hit cinema screens across the country today, pairs Sonam opposite Farhan Akhtar, who plays the title role.
Sonam, however, refused to reveal much about her role. “All I can say is that my role is integral to the film. Hence, I cannot reveal it now,”Sonam said.
At the same time, she denied that she was playing the wife of Milkha Singh as reported in a section of the media.
“I am not playing Milkha Singh’s wife in the film. To know more, you will have to see the film,”she said.
The release of ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ comes a couple of few weeks after the release of Sonam’s last film ‘Ranjhanaa’, which has won her accolades from audiences as well as critics.
On her part, Sonam is thrilled at the response to ‘Ranjhana’, which paired her opposite South Indian star Dhanush.
“I am happy at the response that ‘Ranjhanaa’ has generated. I feel it is a very modern take on india: a take on India’s youth and how they behave. It is about how boys and girls talk in actual life, not what they show on American TV what many filmmakers are making in the romantic space,”Sonam said.
‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ sees Sonam in yet another ‘small town girl role’, after havving essayed similar roles earlier in ‘Delhi 6’, ‘Mausam’ and ‘Ranjhana’.
Sonam said she enjoyed playing such ‘desi girl’ roles.
“It is great that people see me as a ‘Desi Girl’ – a no make-up person, which is completely opposite to what I am in daily life. Perhaps, it is because I speak good Hindi and Urdu. For example, I end up playing several Muslim girl roles -‘Saawariya, Mausam and ‘Ranjhana’- because I speak Urdu fluently,”Sonam said.
Directed by Rakeysh Mehra, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ is the true story of the ‘Flying Sikh’ – world champion runner and Olympian Milkha Singh — who overcame the massacre of his family, civil war during the India-Pakistan partition, and homelessness to become one of India’s most iconic athletes.
Besides Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor, the film stars foreign actress Rebecca Breeds and Bollywood actors Dev Gill, Pavan Malhotra, Dalip Tahil, Prakash Raj and Yash Saxena.
It also features Pakistani actress Meesha Shafi and cricketer Yuvaraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh in a key role.
