Institution of Engineers celebrates World Habitat Day

JAMMU, Oct 1: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu local centre celebrated World Habitat Day at Channi Himmat, Jammu.
A seminar on the theme “Municipal Solid Waste Management” was organized in which large number of engineers, professionals and members of the civil society participated.
On the occasion, Sat Pal Manhas, Chief Engineer, PMGSY, Jammu was the chief guest and Ravi Chanyal, FIE; Chairman, IEI Jammu centre presided over the function.
Dr Zaffar Iqbal, MVO and Nodal Officer, Solid Waste Management, Jammu Municipal Corporation, was the key note speaker. He demonstrated the ways in which household garbage can be utilized as a resource. He advocated that garbage should be minimized at the household and invited the self help groups and NGO’s to come forward and support the JMC in its mission to manage solid wastes in the city.
In addition, eight technical papers on the theme were presented by SC Thukral, FIE; KR Suri, FIE PK Nanda, MIE; Vinod Kumar, MIE; Sunil Seth, MIE; Ranjeev Sawhney, MIE; Mir Muneer Hussain, MIE and Akash Dusgotra, AMIE. The speakers highlighted the problems of Municipal solid waste and suggested ways and techniques for its management.
On the occasion, Sat Pal Manhas was honoured by the Institution for his contributions as Chief Engineer PMGSY in achieving two awards at the national level.
Vijay Sharma, MIE, honorary secretary of the Centre conducted the proceedings of the seminar.
