Srinagar, Aug 25: Shaykh Ghulam Mohammad Bhat Al-Madni has been elected as President of Jamiat-e-Ahlehadith Jammu and Kashmir today after defeating his rival and former president Ghulam Rasool Malik.
Bhat secured 282 votes out of 425 total council members of Jamiat’s Majlis Shura of all the three divisions of state, while as Malik got 130 votes.
Bhat was formally elected as the president of the Jamiat for three years after the assassination of former Jamiat president Maulana Showkat Ahmad Shah, who was killed by gunmen before Friday prayers at Maisuma, Srinagar.
After taking oath, Bhat stressed upon supporting of religious education. He said he will make Jamiat in the State strong while taking in consideration the unity of Muslims.
“Jamiat-e-Ahlehadith has seminaries in various parts of the state for spreading Quranic knowledge among local children and the youth” Bhat said.
While making it clear that there is no external funding for Jamiat, Bhat said that the members of the Jamiat collect funds locally, which is then used for educating youth and providing health care facilities to the deserving people.
