JAMMU, Nov 19: Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) organized 4th Computer Society of India (CSI) J&K Student Convention at its Kot Bhalwal campus.
Over 400 students and faculty members from the region participated in the annual convention. MIET has one of the largest student branches in North India with over 400 student members.
Shiv Kumar, Technical Director, National Informatics Centre (NIC), New Delhi and Regional Vice President (Region 1), CSI, was the chief guest while Saurabh Agarwal, Head – Marketing and Communications, Middle East and Africa, Tata Consultancy Services and Regional Student Convener, CSI, was the guest of honour. Prof Vinod Sharma, Head, Computer Science and IT, University of Jammu, was the second guest of honour.
During the two-day convention, a workshop on “Big Data and Hadoop” was organized by Madan Shray, Programme Manager, Dell-EMC for over 150 participants. A Hackathon, comprising programming competition was also organized in which 40 teams comprising 100 programmers from the region participated.
Finally, a technical paper presentation was organized in which 20 papers were presented by students on the theme, “Innovate India: Technology for a Billion Indians” covering technologies such as Internet of Things, Big Data and Analytics, Clean and Renewable Energy, Smart Cities, Telemedicine and Healthcare, Affordable Housing and Environment Sustainability.
Prof SK Sharma, Director Academics, MIET, in his welcome address, apprised the gathering of the nature of events and activities at MIET under the CSI Student Branch. Prof, Ankur Gupta, Director MIET encouraged the students to innovate in the local context of J&K by undertaking hands-on projects on the problems being faced by the locals such as road safety, traffic regulation, landslide and flood early-warnings, etc.
Saurabh Agarwal presented an overview of benefits to students as CSI members and educated them on industry expectations and developing the right attitude to succeed in a competitive environment. Prof, Vinod Sharma presented a technical overview of the Internet-of-Things.
The chief guest in his speech encouraged professional members to setup a full-fledged chapter of CSI at Jammu. Salim Qureshi, Head, Computer Science at MIET, delivered formal vote of thanks.
