Nubra – Turtuk Valley

It is regrettable that our bureaucratic structure is non-serious and non sensitive about the development of far flung areas like Nubra in Ladakh. Nearly a year has gone by when the Chief Minister visited Nubra -Turtuk and made some important developmental announcement on spot. For example, she said that the Nubra valley could become a very attractive destination for the tourists particularly in the wake of rich cultural heritage that is preserved by the people meticulously.
The MLA of Nubra-Turtuk valley Deldan Namgyal says that for three years in the past he has been crying hoarse about the utility of Nubra-Turtuk valley as a tourist destination of great attraction but sadly the Government does not listen to him. He has a strong case in saying that the Chief Minister had gone a mile further in suggesting that there should be a cultural centre that would become a place of great attraction for the connoisseurs of art because the dress, the artifacts, the handicrafts, ancient monasteries, highest road, the traditions and life style of the people, the double humped camel and the stretched out deserts at that height all are objects of great attraction. He is at a loss why the echelons of bureaucracy are not translating the orders of the Chief Minister into practice. The Chief Minister had also desired to set up a Nubra Development Authority and even had made allocations of 18 crore rupees for the same. But, nothing has happened on that direction.
It is pertinent to mention here that Nubra-Turtuk is one of the best destinations in Ladakh region and during the period between April and August this year a total of 1,19,000 domestic tourists and 13,900 foreign tourists visited the Valley.
What we want to highlight here are two things. One is that Nubra-Turtuk valley has great tourist potential and if that potential is exploited properly, it will be a big source of attraction for national and international tourists. The second thing is that the higher authorities should raise the question why the instructions of the Chief Minister are not implemented despite passage of years at end. The agencies that are hindering implementation of the instructions should be dealt with for dereliction of duty and must face the law.
