KARGIL, Apr 12: To preserve the unique biodiversity in this border town, the first phase of Operation Chuka Lhyakhmo (clean river) was launched by police and civil administration today.
Official sources said Deputy Commissioner, Kargil S Prassana Ramaswami inaugurated the first leg of cleaning river Suru during a function at Syed Mehdi Memorial Hall Kargil. More than 500 people took part in this operation, which is being run jointly by District Police Kargil and District Administration, Kargil.
Briefing about the project, SSP Kargil Dr Shalindra Mishra said Operation Chuka Lhyakhmo is aimed at cleaning Suru and making people aware about the importance and relevance of a neat and clean river.
He said the project will run for three months — April, May and June. At the end of June the first phase will be concluded with a Suru Festival depicting the tradition and cultural ethos of Kargil, he added.
Meanwhile, talking on this occasion, the DC Kargil said even though the project has been initiated by the police and administration, the whole society has to come forward to make it successful.
The main objective of the project is to conserve the unique biodiversity of Kargil, he said, adding in future administration will arrange prefabricated toilet facilities and will take steps for proper waste management.
Currently, the administration is focusing on improving and renovating the existing toilet facilities in the town, he said.
