SRINAGAR, June 4: The Committee on Environment of Legislative Assembly today recommended that all the Deputy Commissioners should act as nodal officers for ensuring Environmental Protection within their respective districts.
The Committee, which met under the chairmanship of MLA, M. Y. Tarigami discussed various issues related to environment.
The meeting was attended by legislators, Mohammad Sharief Niaz, Abdul Rehman Veeri, Mohammad Khalil Band, M. Y. Shah, Rafi Ahmed Mir, Prof. Gharu Ram Bhagat, Durga Dass and Mohammad Ashraf Ganaie.
The panel had threadbare discussion on issues related to proper management and disposal of bio-medical waste generated in various Government and private hospitals and identification of land for disposal of common bio-medical waste.
The committee also discussed the status of drainage and sanitation service being provided to the people within the administrative jurisdiction of all the Municipal Committees of the districts.
The Committee stressed on launching awareness camps to educate people about the importance of environmental protection. It also asked them to involve legislators, Sarpanchs, Panchs, and prominent citizens.
The committee directed the concerned to remove all illegal encroachments, if any, within the vicinity of springs and water bodies.
Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education Shaleen Kabra, Deputy Commissioners, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam, Regional Director, Environment and Remote Sensing, Director, Urban Local Bodies, Kashmir, Principal, GMC, Srinagar, Mission Director, NRHM, Additional Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, Director Health Services, Kashmir, Chief Medical Officers, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama and Anantnag, Special Secretary, Health and Medical Education and senior officers of concerned Department, besides officers and officials of the Assembly Secretariat were present in the meeting.
