JAMMU, Mar 11: State Pollution Control Board organised an awareness workshop on e-waste Management at Forest Information Centre, Jammu.
The work shop first of its kind in the State after the implementation of e-waste Rules, 2011 was attended by the stakeholders involved in the e-waste valve chain, viz, Producers, Sales Officers (Samsung, Videocon, LG), Consumers / Bulk Consumers and Recycling agencies in the State.
It was stressed that all the Sales Offices /producers have to open individual and combined collection centres for collection of e-waste and seek authorization from State Pollution Control Board. Under these plans resource persons from Central Pollution Control Board and Senior Environmental Engineer informed bulk consumers to strictly adhere to the rules and maintain records in Form 2, no matter waste is stored / donated or replaced.
The State Pollution Control Board also stressed upon all stake holders and companies generating electronic waste to comply with e-waste rules and come up with a proposal of scientific disposal of e-waste in environmentally sound manner to avoid any adverse impact to environment as the waste is highly toxic and hazardous in nature.
Arun Kumar Tikku, Chairman and Member Secretary, J&K SPCB also apprised the participants and stake holders regarding the e-waste rules which have been notified by Ministry of Environment & Forest in May 2011 and are effective from May 2012 and deliberated regarding the e-waste integrated facility coming up at IGC, Samba.
Other speakers who spoke on the occasion include J.N. Sharma, Environmental Engineer, J&K SPCB, M.M. Shah, Legal Advisor, J&K SPCB, Anuradha I/C e-waste, J&K SPCB, Jammu. Dr Yashpaul, Scientist B, J&K SPCB, Jammu concluded the proceeding of workshop with important recommendations.
Sajjad Mufti, Regional Director, J&K SPCB, Jammu urged to organise the similar workshop in future also for awareness of e-waste rules and Environment Protection Act 1986.
