Train services resume in Kashmir after remaining suspended for two days

SRINAGAR:  Train services have been resumed after remaining suspended for two days for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where four militants killed in separate encounters recently with security forces.

We have resumed all trains in the Kashmir valley today,  a senior railway official said today.

Early morning trains running between Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region have left for their respective destinations. Train left Banihal for Srinagar, he said adding similarly morning train from Srinagar also left for Banihal.

Similarly train service has been resumed on Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north Kashmir, he said.

The railway official said “We are acting on the advice of administration and police. We are suspending  train service in the valley after receiving an advisory from the administration and police for security reasons, he said adding similarly we are resuming the service after receiving green signal from the authorities.

He said, railways suffered loss of crores of rupees due to suspension of service. Similarly the passengers, particularly daily travellers, are also suffering due to sudden cancellation of trains.

However, people shuttling daily between north to south Kashmir via Srinagar or vice versa prefer train service which is being considered most dependable, cheap and safe mode of transport in the Kashmir valley, where frequent traffic jam is a daily routine.

Railway property has suffered massive damage in the past during protests in the valley, where the train services remained suspended for about six months during summer unrest last year.  (AGENCIES)
