JAMMU, Dec 6: 59th death anniversary of Bharat Ratan Dr B R Ambedkar was observed today by paying rich tributes to father of the Indian Constitution and recalling his services to the people, particularly the unprivileged and down trodden.
All J&K OBC Mahasabha, a united forum of OBC presidents of different castes and communities, paid homage to Dr Ambedkar by lighting candles near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh, on the Tawi bank.
Speakers on the occasion threw light on life and struggle of Dr Ambedkar, who gave hope to millions of socially backward people by introducing a system of reservation for them.
Those who spoke on the occasion included Kasturi Lal Basotra (president of All J&K Sain Samaj, Madan Lal Dogra (ex-president of Kashyap Samaj), Abdul Qadir (general secretary Dhobi Welfare Central Committee), Ayudhya Kumar Manawa (president of Prajapati Sabha), Bansi Lal Choudhary (convener OBC Mahasabha), Dr Tara Chand, Sumitra Devi (President Boria Biradari) and others.
Bahujan Samaj Party observed the Nirwan Divas of Dr Ambedkar by paying tributes to him at Ambedkar Chowk Jammu and elucidating the contribution of Baba Sahib for the betterment and upliftment of oppressed people of the country. BSP leaders, who paid their tributes on the occasion, included M L Tomar, Tarsem Lal Khullar, R L Chargotra, S N Dogra, Pritam Chand, Raj Kumar Thappa, Charanjeet Bitta, Deepak Rana and others.
PCC president G A Mir paid glowing tributes to Dr Ambedkar on his death anniversary and said that the Nation would remain indebted to Babasaheb for the selfless services rendered by him. Babasaheb was a jurist, economist and social reformer who campaigned against social discrimination and against untouchables (Dalits), the PCC chief said.
Jammu Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee organized a function in this regard under the chairmanship of former Minister Mula Ram, who is also chairman of Dr Ambedkar Memorial Committee of the party in J&K.
The participants, who included Ravinder Sharma, Shahnawaz Choudhary, Hari Singh Chib, Rajni Bala and Uday Chib, paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar and remembered his great contribution in the framing of the Constitution of India. Mula Ram described Dr Ambedkar as the architect of the Constitution of India.
District Congress Committee, Jammu Urban, also organized a tribute paying ceremony on the occasion. The district president, Anil Chopra and others addressed the gathering and recalled the services of Dr Ambedkar to the Nation.
Members of the Jammu and Kashmir Batwal Welfare Association, while offering floral tributes to Dr Ambedkar on his 59th Nirvan Diwas, here today, hailed the Government of India for celebrating the ‘Constitution Day’.
The Association chairman, Sub Maj Ramesh Sargotra said that Babasaheb was an embodiment of simplicity, who struggled throughout his life to improve the socio-economic status of the marginalized sections of the society. Others, who spoke, included Capt Om Parkash Tugga, Capt Kamal Chand Motan, Capt Kamal Dass Kaith, Capt Krishan Lal Tugga, Sub Maj Thoru Ram Mandi, Sub Baldev Chand Sandhu, Sub Narayan Dass Bassa and others.
The Jammu University SC/ST Employees Association organized a function to pay tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr B R Ambedkar. Speaking on the occasion, the Association president R L Kaith said that Dr Ambedkar wasn’t just a politician but an intellectual as well who did some great work as an economist. “There was hardly any economist who had as much insight as his in that era. Hence, he was able to write many books on subjects like Indian economic system, and his writings are relevant even after too many of the years,” he added.
The Association members demanded setting up of an Ambedkar Chair in the University of Jammu for students to pursue research on him and also urged the State Government to issue an Ordinance allowing the reservation in promotions to continue for social uplift of the reserved categories.
