JAMMU, Jun 3: A major tragedy was averted this evening when two parked buses caught fire at the New Bus Stand Yard here.
Police said the fire, which started under mysterious circumstances, was quickly doused by a team of firefighters.
According to them, the incident involved two Banihal route buses which caught fire. After noticing the flames, police said, the drivers and the nearby shopkeepers immediately sprang into action, moving the nearby busses to a safer location.
They said the drivers initially attempted to extinguish the flames using fire extinguishers at the bus stand, but their efforts were insufficient.
Later, a team of firefighters, along with two fire tenders, was promptly deployed to the scene.
After a two-hour operation, the firefighters managed to control the blaze, which had intensified due to a windstorm, preventing it from spreading to nearby vehicles and other areas of the parking lot, said police.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Meanwhile, police have started investigating the cause of the fire.
