JAMMU, July 22: 10-member women sport climbing team including three officials of Mountaineering Association of J&K left today for Delhi for participation in the 2nd Women North Zone Sport Climbing Championship scheduled to be organized at Indian Mountaineering Foundation on July 23 and July 24, 2017.
Shawetica Khajuria, Joint Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K and a national judge of sport climbing accompanied the team as Manager, while Shashi Kant is the coach of the team.
It is almost a new look team with a blend of experience and fresh talent.
While Shilpa Charak (Jammu) and Sumiya Kousar (Reasi) have already won medals at the Zonal level, Ambreen Fatima (Kargil, presently Jammu) & Vaishali Sharma (Jammu) were also a part of the State team last year. Vishali Sarmal and Punam Thakur (Kathua), Deepika Dutta (Jammu) and Razia Tabassum (Kargil, presently Jammu) are all talented but fresh climbers who shall gain some valuable experience and good exposure of climbing at the international standard climbing walls at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation complex.
Earlier, the team had undergone 21days coaching organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K at Tenzing Norgay Sport Climbing wall in the Sprawling Buds School complex under the guidance of Shashi Kant Sharma, the present trainer of the state team.
The competitions in the Zonal championship at Delhi will be conducted in all the three forms of climbing i.e lead, speed and bouldering at the international standard 50ft high lead and speed climbing walls and the bouldering Gym in the IMF premises. The J&K climbers though quite inexperienced as far as climbing on international standard walls is concerned are expected to put up a good show and win at least three medals.
Earlier today, the team was given an impressive send off by Sumit Khajuria, Managing Director, Adventure Holidays India from its office at Sarwal, Jammu.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included Ram Khajuria, General Secretary; Yogeshwar Kumar, Vice President; Shawetica Khajuria, Joint Secretary and Navneet Gupta, Secretary, Snow Trail Mountaineers.
The state team is beeing sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
