1200 sports personnel of JKAP vying for top honours

SRINAGAR, June 12:  The week long annual Inter-Battalion sports meet being organised by Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police to mark the Raising Day of J&K Police was inaugurated today by Parvaiz Ahmad Malik, Commissioner Secretary Youth Services and Sports in a colorful function at Bakshi Stadium, here today.
The sports meet is aimed to identify the talented sportspersons in various fields and promote sports culture in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Malik highlighted the importance of sports in the overall development of an individual and stressed upon the participants to exhibit their high standards of discipline during the tournament without fear of losing or pride of win.
At the inaugural ceremony, an exhibition football match was played between J&K Police and Novelty Football Club Srinagar and a colorful Parade and a cultural programme was presented by smart and colorfully attired personnel of Armed Police.
Earlier, IGP Armed Kashmir, Sunil Kumar presented a detailed report of the Inter-Battalion Meet, which he said provides an opportunity to the sports personnel deployed in different corners of the state to have a get together and interact. He said that 1200 players drawn from 28 battalions of the Armed Police, including women players, shall compete for the honours in different teams and individual events in this week long competition.
He further said that the sports meet would help the organization to identify talented sports persons to form a strong contingent which could represent the Armed Zone in the forthcoming Inter-Zone Tournament of the J&K Police scheduled to be inaugurated on 18th of this month.
The sports events which are to be played during the meet included basketball (men and women), volleyball (men and women), tug of war (men and women) , Judo (men), wrestling (men and women), weightlifting (men and women), football (men), handball (men and women), kabbadi (men and women), archery (women), hockey (men), shooting (men and women), Athletics 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m, 5000 m, 10000 m, 4 X 100 m relay, 12 km and marathon as track events, shot-put, hammer throw, Javelin throw, discuss throw, long and high jumps as field events will take place for men and athletic 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 5000, 400 X 100 relay, shot-put, hammer throw and javelin throw will also take place for women during the tournament.  Besides, gazetted officers will compete in the sports disciplines including badminton, table tennis, lawn tennis and shooting.
The competitions will be held at five different venues which include Bakshi Stadium Srinagar, Polo ground, Gindun Playfield Rajbagh, Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Stadium and Police Control Room Srinagar.
Among others present on the occasion were Additional DGP Armed, S M Sahai and DIG Armed Kashmir, Mushtaq Sadiq.
Result of Athletic events: In 12 km athletic event, Constable Showkat Ahmad of JKAP 12th Bn bagged first prize, Ct Mujahid Ali of IRP 10th Bn clinched second spot, while Mudasir Ahmad of IRP 19th Bn claimed third position.
The 12 km athletic team event was bagged by the team of JKAP 9th Bn comprising of Constables Rakesh Kumar, Rohit Sharma, Sohan Lal and Rakesh Singh while the athletic team of JKAP 12th Bn comprising of Constables Showkat Ahmad, Bal Raj, Gora Singh and Darshan Kumar remained runners-up in the event.
