15 months after inauguration, 4th Tawi bridge awaits proper lighting system

JAMMU, Aug 18: In what could be termed as official apathy, the 4th bridge on River Tawi is still awaiting proper lighting system despite the fact that it was thrown open for normal vehicular traffic about 15 months back.
The vital bridge was inaugurated by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah on May 26, 2013. Though pole lights were installed on both sides of the bridge but due to the official apathy the same remained non-functional thereby making the bridge prone to the accidents.
The people, who are regularly making use of this bridge, brought the poor lighting arrangement to the notice of Public Works Department and Jammu Municipal Corporation but both these agencies continued to shift the responsibility instead of taking steps to make the lights functional.
Even a number of deputations visited EXCELSIOR office and expressed serious concern over the failure of PWD and JMC to ensure proper lighting system so as to ensure that accidents don’t take place on the bridge. As none from the administration found it appropriate to initiate the required steps, some people including RTI activists started approaching Grievance Cell of the Chief Minister seeking his personal intervention.
In response to one such complaint from RTI activist Raman Sharma, the Grievance Cell has conveyed that Executive Engineer, Electrical JMC has been requested by the Executive Engineer R&D Construction Division No.III to take over the lighting system of 4th Tawi bridge for its proper maintenance and upkeep.
However, it is not known whether the request of R&B has been conceded by the Jammu Municipal Corporation or not.
