A total number of patients who have been tested positive for H1N1 have reached 16, with 14 new positive cases reported at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura where they are currently undergoing treatment.
While two patients were already admitted to the hospital, all the new patients have been in the hospital over last 2-3 days and are currently undergoing treatment. The hospital administration has termed the majority of these patients as ‘stable’.
The hospital administration told Excelsior that the new cases were reported over a period of last few days and given their condition, the majority of them are set to be discharged from the hospital soon.
However, there are two patients-tested positive for H1N1-who have been kept on the life-saving support and whose condition is termed to be critical. Both the patients have got comorbidities which is making their condition unstable.
“Over the period of few days, more cases of H1N1 positive were reported at the hospital. Currently, 14 new patients who have been tested positive for H1N1 are undergoing treatment at the hospital; out of these 14 cases, 2 are on ventilators,” Dr Farooq Jan, Medical Superintendent, SKIMS told Excelsior.
He said that both the patients who are on the life support are suffering from other diseases (comorbidities) which is, in turn, making their condition serious. “One is already a patient of Type-II Diabetes and another one is suffering from chronic kidney disease. We are monitoring their condition,” he said.
As per the hospital administration, except for these two patients who are critical, the treatment of rest of the patients is almost done and they would be discharged any time soon.
Earlier, last week 2 patients were tested positive for the virus and were also undergoing treatment at the hospital. Both the patients were said to be stable.
The hospital data revealed that a total of 72 patients were tested positive for the virus since September at SKIMS. With new 14 cases being reported, the total number has climbed to 86 so far. What has brought a respite that no death took place due to H1N1 since September.
Further, from the Out Patient Department (OPD) of SKIMS, a total of 702 samples of the patients with flu symptoms were taken for the tests since September.
Out of a total of 702 samples, 298 patients were tested positive. Further breakup stated that out of 298 cases, 268 cases were tested positive for Influenza-B and 30 patients for Influenza-A. The rest of the 404 samples came back negative.
Both, Influenza-A, B are the sub-types of the H1N1 virus and on being tested positive for one among them, doctors usually recommend home isolation with a continuous intake of medicines. Such patients are admitted to the hospital after they report laboured breathing along with other issues.
