17th Jammu District Sport Climbing Championship commences

JAMMU, May 5: 17th Jammu District Sport Climbing Championship, being organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council commenced today at Sprawling Buds School, Chinore, here.
Sonia Sharma of KS Public School bagged gold medal in the Girls category, while the silver and bronze medals were claimed by Tanisha Chopra of Shastri Memorial HSS, Patoli and Anshita Sharma of Shiksha Niketan Secondary School, Jammu.
In Lead Climbing (women category), Ambreen Fatima of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar retained the title while the second and third positions were secured by Muskan Abrol of Janipur and Himani Choudhary of GCW, Gandhi Nagar.
Meanwhile, 9 climbers led by Randeep Singh Parihar and Rudhar Partap Singh of Sprawling Buds School have entered the final round in the Sub Junior Boys category. Similarly,10 girls led by Sejal Raina and Sonakshi of Sprawling Buds School have also reached the final in the Mini Girls category in which 43 girls competed for honours.
In the Sub Junior Girls category in which Zuffi Shan Khatana of Sprawling Buds School leads the pack of 8 girls to the final round the remaining 7 girls are from Shiksha Niketan School.
In the Mini Boys category in which 69 climbers participated, 8 boys led by Keshwam Dev Singh of Kendriya Vidyalaya Nagrota who topped the wall in great style have qualified for the final round.
Final rounds of lead climbing and all the speed climbing competitions will be conducted tomorrow.
Earlier, the championship in which about 250 climbers are participating was declared open by former MLA Ashwani Sharma in the presence of Secretary Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee Ram Khajuria, Shawetica Khajuria, Joint Secretary Mountaineering Association of J&K and Directors of Sprawling Buds School, Arti Sharma and Rahul Sharma.
While addressing the gathering the Chief Guest lauded the role of Mountaineering Association of J&K assured all possible help and cooperation for further promotion of the game in J&K.
Among others present were Navneet Gupta, Secretary Snow Trail Mountaineers, Jammu, Manik Slathia, a trained mountaineer, Shashi Kant and Ambreen Fatima, both qualified Belayers, Himani Choudhary and Sakshi Magotra, both sport climbing judges, Fazal Ahmad, Anju Slathia and Satish Bhan, sports organizer.
