2-day seminar on ‘Healthcare in Detention” held

JAMMU, Sept 24: A two-day  seminar on “Health Care in Detention” was organized by the International Committee of Red Cross (IRCS) in collaboration with J&K Prisons Department and Directorate of Health Services, Jammu.
The seminar dwelt on the measures to improve the healthcare system in detention and discussed all   issues pertaining to it.
During the inaugural session, the former Director General of Police, Prisons, Dr Ashok Bhan, spoke about the importance of medicare in Prisons for proper maintenance of the health of inmates. He also emphasized to maintain a satisfactory standard of general sanitation and hygiene within the institution. He stressed that the Prisons Department is putting in its best efforts so as to provide access to continuation of health care services to all the prisons inmates and to fulfill the healthcare needs of the inmates in efficient manner.
On the occasion, Director Health Services, Jammu, Dr Baljeet Singh Pathania spoke about need of medical examination on admission of every prisoner in the jail. He stressed on the need of coordination between Prisons Department and Health Department to meet the medical requirement of the prison inmates.
Team leader ICRC,    Alexandra also spoke on the opening session of the seminar. She emphasized on importance of health in detention.
Dr Rard Abu Rabi, Head of Health Department Unit ICRS Geneva was the main speaker for the seminar who spoke on various issues of utmost importance in context of healthcare in detention and role of ICRS in improving the living conditions of inmates.
Superintendents from all the jails of Jammu province and the Prison Medical Officers and doctors from Directorate of health services Jammu region attended the seminar.
