JAMMU, Jan 11: Like other parts of country, 26th Road Safety Week commenced today across Jammu province. The week is being observed by Motor Vehicle Department J&K and Traffic Police from today to January 17 on the theme “Safety is not just a slogan, it’s a way of life”.
The inaugural function was held at Green Field Gandhi Nagar with Walkathon and flagging off a rally by IG Traffic Jammu, Muneer Ahmed Khan, comprising hundreds of school children, college students, traffic police, driving institutions, auto unions and automobile dealers which after passing through different parts of Jammu city culminated at the starting point.
Joint Transport Commissioner, GA Sofi, Deputy Transport Commissioner, ML Raina, Special Traffic Magistrate, RS Jasrotia, ADC Jammu, KS Parihar, Director School Education Jammu, RA Inqlabi, SSP Traffic, Mohan Lal, RTO Jammu, Arvind Kotwal, ARTO Kuldeep Singh, General Manager JKSRTC, RS Jamwal, Secretary Red Cross Society, RC Puri, representatives of Automobile and Transport Associations, volunteers from Civil Defence, NCC, Red Cross, Bharat Scouts and Guides, MVD Inspectors, school children, drivers, conductors besides prominent citizens were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, IG Traffic called upon the stake holders, civil society especially youth and other agencies to rededicate their efforts to ensure safety of people besides restricting fatal road accidents.
At Kathua, Motor Vehicle Department in collaboration with Traffic police organized a rally in connection with 26th Road Safety week.
The rally was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner Kathua Dr Shahid Iqbal while RTO Lakhanpur, Mohammad Nazir Sheikh, ARTO Kathua, Salim Manhas, Ravi Kant SSP Traffic Rural Jammu, Dr Bharat Bushan CEO Lakhanpur Sarthal Development Authority, TK Bhat DC Sale Tax, District officers, prominent citizens of Kathua and DTI Kathua were also present on the occasion.
Deputy Commissioner while addressing the participants impressed upon them to wear crash helmets and seat belts as a safety measure and follow the traffic rules strictly.
The rally began from the office of RTO Lakhanpur and culminated at PWD guest house Kathua.
26th Road Safety Awareness Week, being organised by Traffic Police National Highway Ramban also commenced.
The event would also be organised at district headquarters Reasi, Udhampur, Ramban, Banihal, Doda and Kishtwar. Awareness seminar for public, drivers, transporters and road users were organised at Udhampur, Reasi, Banihal, Doda and Kishtwar. Besides, literature was given to the participants to educate them about various safety measures need to taken to avoid road mishap.
Meanwhile, student rallies were also taken out to raise massive awareness among the people on the subject. Besides, the authority also pasted pamphlets at prominent places reflecting the road safety rules and responsibilities.
At Poonch, Motor Vehicle Department in collaboration with District Police organized an awareness programme at bus stand, attended among others by the Senior Superintendent of Police, JS Johar, ARTO, Varinder Manyal, DySP HQ, Deepak Digra, officers of Traffic Police besides transporters, commuters, drivers and conductors.
Speaking on the occasion SSP highlighted the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations to drivers and conductors and exhorted them to follow road safety rules in letter and spirit to ensure safety of human life.
A team of doctors comprising of Dr Farooq Ahmed and Dr Tariq Mehmood also conducted medical check up of drivers and conductors.
