JAMMU, Nov 11: The Department of Legal Metrology today came to the rescue of hapless consumers, who were cheated by unscrupulous trading practices.
According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller Legal Metrology Consumer protection, on the complaint of Consumer Welfare Association, one of the officer acted as a dummy consumer & purchased 1 kg cake from each of the leading trader in Gandhi Nagar area at the rate of Rs 600, Rs 400 & Rs 500. On weighing it was found to be net of 775 g,875g & 850 g.
The consumers were being deceived of the gross weight by including the weight of the cardboard tray which is deliberately added to the weight of the eatable cake. On further scrutinizing the market value of the tray, the average rate came to Rs 8 thereby the gullible consumers were made to purchase that tray at the expensive rate of the cake. On calculations it was revealed that consumers were robbed of  Rs 80 to Rs 130 per kg on the sale of cake.
Accordingly, M/s Jai Hind Bakery, M/s Dayal & M/s Renuka Cake were booked for selling cake short in weight under the relevant provisions of the law enforced for the purpose & case recommended for legal proceedings in the appropriate court of law. All the three defaulters were directed to display conspicuously the rates of the different varieties of the eatables along with the weight of the tray so that consumer can correlate & get actual weight paid for.
