SRINAGAR, Oct 10: Authorities imposed strict restrictions in parts of Srinagar city including city centre Lal Chowk to prevent violence and arrested 40 persons from different parts of Kashmir valley even as shutdown paralysed life for 94th day today.
Strict restrictions were imposed in old city areas of Srinagar and Lal Chowk to prevent Muharram procession at a time when there is surcharged atmosphere in Kashmir in the wake of continued unrest since July this year.
Hundreds of police and CRPF personnel were deployed in Lal Chowk, Maisuma, Dalgate, Shaheed Gunj, Karan Nagar, Batamaloo and Guru Bazar areas of city since early morning to prevent Muharram processions.
The Muharram procession is being taken out from Abi Guzar area of Lal Chowk to Dalgate but the authorities disallowed it.
Restrictions continued in five police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and Khanyar – since early morning and these areas wore deserted look throughout the day.
A police official said the situation across Srinagar remained peaceful throughout the day and there was no untoward incident. He, however said that stone-pelting between protesters and security forces occurred at Noorbagh and Gojwara in the evening.
Clashes erupted at Old Town Baramulla and Nadihal in Sopore between protesters and security forces. A protest rally was held at Bandipora while clashes raged at Harmain in Shopian this evening.
A police statement said here that in view of sensitivity of some areas and as a precautionary measure curfew was imposed in some areas of Srinagar city today. “There was no curfew elsewhere in the Valley. The situation across Kashmir remained by and large peaceful. During the day vendors were seen doing their usual business in the markets as well as lanes of the towns across Valley,” the statement said.
“Vehicles were seen plying normally on roads in the curfew free areas of Srinagar city as well as other towns”, the statement said.
“In the meantime, continuing with its drive against the miscreants across the Kashmir valley, 40 persons who were found involved in different offences of creating public disorder and disruption of normal activities has been arrested by police during past 24 hours,” the statement added.
Some miscreants this evening set on fire two private vehicles bearing registration numbers JK01N-6690 (Estello) and JK02AB-103 (Swift-VDI) at Goripora Crossing near Snooker Hall in Sanat Nagar area of Srinagar.
Police has taken cognizance and started investigation.
