SSP asks people to verify contents before circulating

JAMMU, Mar 20: Jammu Police called five persons for forwarding fake and fabricated message regarding two positive cases of COVID-19 in a specified house.
As per official spokesman, in view of the prevailing COVID-19 situation, a number of fake messages are being sent in different social media channels and are becoming viral and causing a panic in the society.
A similar fake message was circulated in different WhatsApp groups of Jammu wherein one house was specified to have 2 COVID-19 positive patients creating panic among the Jammuites.
‘Acting swiftly on this, it was denied widely by Jammu Police after confirming it from the concerned authorities. A complaint was lodged under relevant sections of the law at Police Station Gandhi Nagar’ the spokesman said, adding that Cyber Police Station Jammu identified 7 to 8 WhatsApp users from the preliminary verification who had circulated that fake message in different groups.
The spokesman said that the identified persons namely Rajinder Sadotra, Vikas Sharma, Amit Samnotra, Raman Gupta and Vikas Arora were called in the police station for questioning and SHO with the assistance of Cyber Police Station Jammu is trying hard to reach upto the person who had initiated this fake message and made it viral creating chaos among the people of Jammu.
Appealing to the Jammuites, SSP Jammu Shridhar Patil has urged people not to send or share any message until and unless they are sure about the authenticity of that message. Strict Action will be taken against the rumour mongers.
He also informed that a bulletin on COVID-19 figures is issued by Medical and Health department on daily basis and carries the genuine details, which can be referred to for any query. Other helpline numbers and dial 100 of Police Control Room can also be used for any clarification, SSP informed.
SSP Cyber Police Jammu Sandeep Mehta has warned that unnecessary forwarding of in-genuine and rumour filled messages can land the people in trouble. He asked the people to avoid circulating fake messages.
