Leh, Dec 28: As many as 42 table tennis players participated in different categories including men, women, young boys and girls in the weeklong 5th District Table Tennis Tournament played here at Indoor Stadium Leh.
The tournament was organised by District Table Tennis Association Leh (DTTAL) in collaboration with District Youth Services and Sport.
Hill Council Deputy Chairman Gyal P.Wangail was chief guest during the final match of the tournament while ITBP SHQ Ladakh DIG JP Yadav and Municipal Committee Leh (MCL) President Dr.Ishey Namgyal were guests of honour.
The under-17 double category final match was won by Rinchen Wangail and Mohammad Mustafa while Skalzang Nurboo and Tsewang Dorjay remained runner up. Similarly in men double final Siddharth Nurboo and Amjad Khan emerged winner and Padma Stanzin and Tsering Gyalpo remained runner up. In the men Single final Amjad Khan was winner while Tsering Galpo was runner up. In women single category final Rigzin Yangdol was the winner followed by Ishey Angmo runner up. In under-17 single category Rinchen Wangail was winner and Tsewang Dorjay was runner up.
Assuring support from Hill Council in future Deputy Chairman Gyal P. Wangyal said that DTTAL should now focus on representing the district players at State and National Level tournament. He also urged ITBP to conduct table tennis tournament in winters to keep youth busy in winters.
Appreciating the organising committee to conduct such tournament in harsh temperature DIG JP Yadav said that ITBP also organises number of tournaments and recently High Altitude football tournament was also organised to provide platform to sportsperson in Ladakh region.
Assuring support in future to organise such tournament MCL President Dr.Ishey Namgyal hopes that in future Administration would come up with an idea to built a multipurpose hall having heating facilities to organise number of event in winters.
On the occasion Councillors, District Youth Service and Sport Officer Tsering Tashi, SKAUST Dr. Namgyal and Inspector Sonam Angchok were also present.
Earlier presenting the welcome speech DTTAL Vice President Thupstan Wangyal urged the Administration to provide regular coach, proper space along with good infrastructure and funding to hold such tournament bi-annually. He added that table tennis is one of the most popular sports in winter to keep the young minds away from negative activities such as gambling and drugs abuse.
Later, chief guest and guest of honour distributed certificates and trophies to the winner and runner up players.
DTTAL Joint Secretary Dr. Tsultim Dorjay presented the vote of thanks.
