SRINAGAR, July 18: As the incidents of assault on doctors in hospital increase, the medicos today said that there is a gap between the doctors and the public which can only be filled by the Government by putting in place the required infrastructure and manpower across Valley hospitals.
The doctors posted across Kashmir told Excelsior that there is a need to take some corrective measures by the Government which can ultimately result in decreasing tension and conflict that has intensified amid COVID-19 crises.
“The tension was and has been already there due to the lack of several facilities in the healthcare sectors. The Government has to take measures to get this tension down otherwise it will be drastic for the society,” Dr Imtiyaz Banday, President of Society of Dental Surgeons told Excelsior.
He said that the Government has to work as an agency to bridge the gap which can only happen when the adequate necessities are fulfilled.
He said that the public has got grievances with the Government for not putting in place required machinery that’s needed in these crises and in the doctors are caught in the middle.
Dr Iqbal Saleem Mir, a senior doctor at Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar told Excelsior that the events that happened over the last few days were put out in the public in a very negative way.
He also said that anger is the result of the messaging that has been done by a section of media over a period of time amid the COVID-19 crisis.
“There is no oxygen bed available, and people go and thrash the doctor; there is something wrong with the food, people go and thrash the doctors, how is that justified,” he said.
He said that the doctors are doing their best in the presence of limited resources that have been kept at their disposal.
“The situation is worse, and people have to understand that people will die and that’s what is happening in the rest of the world and we can minimize the deaths provided we are given with best possible infrastructure” he said.
Another doctor, a Gynaecologist, told Excelsior on the condition of anonymity that there is a need for the administration to increase the manpower required in the hospitals in the time of the present crisis. He also held a section of media responsible increased public-media tension
“There is a need for building scientific temperament in our population in order to decrease these incidents, in the meantime, the health administration has to come forwards and they have to release the burden of these doctors in hospitals,” he said.
All the doctors impressed upon on having intra-hospital security at all the major hospitals and also underlined the need of the government intervening and taking measures to reduce the tension that’s going on.
