UDHAMPUR, July 19: Repaired only ten days back, the wooden bridge on Tawi in block Chenani, once again got damaged this morning.
The bridge was partially damaged on June 27 when a Tipper was passing on it. A portion of bridge caved in and the Tipper remained stuck on the bridge for around two hours till it was removed by the locals with lot of hectic efforts.
The broken portion was repaired only ten days back and it got damaged again this morning as this wooden bridge is 60 years old.
Demanding fully replacement of this old wooden bridge, locals held a protest demonstration against the Public Works Department (PWD) and the District administration Udhampur. This wooden bridge, constructed over Tawi by PWD way back around 1959, is the only link between Chenani to Pattangarh, Dhanas Gharian, Nagulta, Tandhar, Satyalta.
Being in dilapidated condition, it poses serious threats to the safety of over 13 Panchayats and thousands of people. Hundreds of local people and patients rushing to Sub District Hospital, District Hospital Udhampur have no option other than to travel on this bridge. Since the area produces vegetables in great quantity, the produce is transported from here to other areas after crossing this dilapidated bridge.
