NEW DELHI, Aug 10:
Former President Pranab Mukherjee today underwent a brain surgery at a military hospital here, and he tested positive for COVID-19 prior to the procedure, sources at the hospital said.
The surgery was carried out at the Army’s Research and Referral (R&R) hospital for removal of a clot in his brain, they said.
Mukherjee is critical and is on ventilator support, the sources said.
At the same time, they said his vital parameters are stable and that the surgery was successful. A multidisciplinary team doctors is constantly monitoring the health of 84-year-old Mukherjee.
In the afternoon, the former President had tweeted: “On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self isolate and get tested for COVID-19.”
Meanwhile, India’s Novel Coronavirus tally crossed the 22-lakh mark today with 62,064 new cases, while the recoveries surged to over 15.35 lakh, the Health Ministry said.
The death toll from the pathogen climbed to 44,386 with 1,007 more fatalities, according to the ministry data.
There are 6,34,945 active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The total coronavirus cases now stands at 22,15,074, it said.
India’s COVID-19 recoveries have crossed the “historic peak” of 1.5 million with the recovery of 15,35,743 patients that was possible because of the policy of “testing aggressively, tracking comprehensively and treating efficiently”, the Health Ministry said in a statement. (PTI)
