LEH, Aug 29: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Leh Sachin Kumar Vaishya flagged off one-day Fit India Freedom Run today.
The run was organized by District Youth Services & Sports Department Leh and it began from the main market and culminated at the petrol pump chowk Leh.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Leh Dr Zahida Bano, Director Tourism Ladakh Kunzes Angmo and other district officers of Leh along with Everest climbers Tsering Angmo and Rigzin Dolkar and famous athletes like Tsetan Dolkar and others who represented Ladakh in various marathons of the country, also participated in the run.
Fit India Freedom Run is an initiative of Fit India Movement organized from 15th August to 2nd October with the motto to keep countrymen fit and helps to get freedom from obesity, laziness, stress, anxiety, diseases and others. The concept of this Freedom Run is that one can run/walk along a route of one’s choice at a time that suits him the best.
This day is also celebrated as National Sports Day every year to honour the hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. The Government of India has decided to celebrate his birthday i.e. August 29, as the National Sports Day since 2012.
It is pertinent to mention that Major Dhyan Chand, the greatest hockey player of India won three Olympic gold medals. At the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936, Dhyan Chand was appointed as the captain of the Indian Hockey team. He had scored more than 400 international goals in his international career from 1926 to 1948. He was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour in the year 1956 by the Government of India.
