NIA in doldrums

Created two years ago with the objective of investigating and prosecuting offences affecting the sovereignty, integrity and security of the country,  National Investigation Agency is still battling for infrastructural pre-requisites that would enable the organization discharge its duties effectively and efficiently. It has created the grid called NATGRID, the first of the kind of project that will coordinate various databases. But it is severely handicapped owing to non-availability of elementary facilities like requisite manpower, independent means of conveyance and above all faced with lackadaisical attitude by various components at Government level that are supposed to be part and parcel of the investigation process in given cases of offence. NIA chief told a Parliamentary panel that the organization was not allowed vehicles to make it mobile and the sleuths were forced to hire taxis. The Finance Ministry did not sanction funds for purchase of vehicles on account of austerity drive launched by the Government. The chief apprised the parliamentary panel of its other difficulties coming in the way of its proper functioning. All that one can say is that if the Government is really serious in pursuing investigation of offences challenging national security, it has to provide the agency with the wherewithal required to do its duty. Provide them with tools and watch their output. That is the simple exhortation we would like to pass on to the Government.
