New Delhi, May 30:
Former Sports Minister M S Gill today joined the chorus of demand for the resignation of N Srinivasan as BCCI president, saying “he should step down immediately in the best interest of the country”.
“When I was made the minister I came out in open and said that there was a clear case of conflict of interest. One person cannot be the Board president as well as a team owner,” he said.
“I am of the view that the BCCI president should quit in the best interest of the country,” Gill told ‘Zee News’.
The call for Srinivasan’s resignation became louder in the wake of the arrest of his son-in-law and CSK team owner Gurunath Meiyappan on charges of betting in IPL.
Pressure from within the BCCI mounted against Srinivasan’s continuance with heavyweights Rajeev Shukla and Arun Jaitley coming out in the open even as from BCCI chief Sharad Pawar also joining in.
Among the 30 members of the BCCI, cricket associations of Assam, Goa and Delhi are the latest units that have openly asked Srinivasan to step down as president of BCCI.
Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association chief and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia was the first BCCI member to demand for Srinivasan’s resignation.
However, Srinivasan has shown defiance, refusing to quit and insisting that his resignation is only being sought by a “hounding media”. (PTI)
