SRINAGAR, June 2: In the first T20 Cricket Tournament organised by Sopore Police, Syndicate Eleven Sopore defeated Paradise Cricket Club (PCC), Tarzoa, in a close contest at Khushal Sports Stadium.
Irshad Ahmad and Imtiyaz Ahmad of Syndicate Eleven scored 41 each. Abdul Hamid and Rafiq Ahmad of PCC took three wickets each.
The winning team was awarded the winners trophy along with a cash prize of Rs 50 thousand. 30 thousand were awarded to the runner up team along with runners up trophy. Besides, ten thousand were given each to Man of the series and Man of the match.
54 cricket teams from district Sopore participated in the tournament which was inaugurated by the then Home Minister of State Nasir Aslam Wani in June last year.
Inspector General of Police AG Mir spoke on the occasion saying that police is organizing such events vis-a-vis routine duty to channelize the energy of youth in a positive direction which otherwise has a tendency to fall prey to the exploitation by vested interests. He congratulated Sopore Police for organizing the event.
DIG North Kashmir J P Singh said the “sole aim” of organizing the tournament was to bridge the gap between police and people. “This event was aimed at providing an opportunity for us to know each other and clear some perceived misconceptions,” he said.
Sajad Ahmad Kichloo, Minister of State for Home was the chief guest at the occasion. Besides MLA Rafiabad Javid Ahmad Dar, MLA Sopore Haji Mohammad Ashraf and MLA Sangrama Basharat Ahmad Bukhari were the guests of honour.
