Meanwhile, suspected case of black fungus has been reported at the Government Dental College (GDC) Srinagar today.
They said that the patient suffering from uncontrolled sugar levels reported to the OPD of the Dental College and that the final confirmation in this regard is yet to come.
Dr Ajaz Ahmad Shah, Professor and HoD, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department, GDC Srinagar told Excelsior that the patient reported to the OPD and is not admitted as yet.
“Patient in 50’s reported to the OPD today and is a fine case of Mucormycosis, however, we are yet to confirm it,” he said.
He added that patient hailing from Srinagar had tested positive for COVID-19 earlier. However, after recovering from the infection the patient reported to the OPD and look like a case of black fungus.
“The golden rule in the biopsy and we will carry that out to confirm the same,” he said.
Dr Shah said that the patient has got a history of diabetes and had earlier tested positive for COVID. “…that goes in favour of that but to ascertain that we will have to carry out the biopsy,” he said.
The doctors had said that people need not to worry about the black fungus as such cases have been treated last year as well and the patient was discharged well after recovery.
During the day, Dr Naveed Nazir Professor, & Head Chest Medicine GMC Srinagar in a Tweet said that the black fungus was not a new disease and there was a need for the diabetes patients to remain cautious.
“Mucormycosis is not a new disease neither contagious. We just need to avoid self medication like steroids, identify high risk patients and keep blood sugar under control,” he wrote on Twitter.
In another Tweet, Dr Naveed said that in November last year, the Dental College’s Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department successfully treated one such case.
“As per HoD Oral & Maxillofacial surgery GDC Srinagar they have already successfully operated one case of mucormycosis in Nov 2020 and another strong suspect case admitted with them.. both post covid and diabetics,” he tweeted.
