Governor’s nod to J&K Gas Pipeline Ordinance is bound to bring cheer and relief to the people. The ordinance allows starting work on laying Bhatinda-Jammu-Srinagar gas pipeline. With ordinance in place instructions will be issued to the District Commissioners of eight districts of the State to begin the work of acquiring land for laying the gas pipeline. Land for the purpose will be acquired in accordance with the land acquisition Act in force. The ordinance gives directions on safety and security of the pipeline and proposes punishment to those found damaging the project. The project has been entrusted to M/S Gujarat Petronet, a reputed company with dependable experience in the field.
Bringing gas pipeline to the State is a major achievement of the present Government in the State. We have gone through many hiccups on account of energy resource. With insufficient and uncertain electric power supply, dependence on gas has increased manifold. But even in the case of gas supply, the State has been facing serious difficulties. To most of these woes bringing gas pipeline is the dependable alternative. In particular, Kashmir valley usually experiences hardships during winter months when road communication is disrupted by snowfall and heavy rains. Gas pipeline will be a big relief to the people.
It has to be remembered that bringing gas pipeline to homes should be the ultimate objective as is the case in major cities. That takes a good deal of time and the project of home gas pipelines should also begin simultaneously. Further extension of gas pipeline to major towns in both the regions should also be under the consideration of the State Government. A town with requisite population should be brought on the gas pipeline map of the State.
