Srinagar, July 1: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has found two more drugs as sub-standard whose samples were taken from Jammu and Kashmir Government hospitals in April this year after expose of fake drug scam in the State.
The CDSCO had taken 131 drug samples during its raids of various Government hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir. Out 131 samples taken, reports of 25 samples were recieved by them so far and 2 drugs were found spurious.
The sub-standard drugs are Ofloxcin tables and Nitrofurantoin tablets that were supplied to the Jammu and Kashmir hospitals. 106 reports are still awaited.
It may be mentioned here that Excelsior broke the spurious drug scam early April this year leading to registration of cases against suppliers and manufacturers of Maxamizine-625 drug that was supplied to hospitals across Kashmir valley. The anti-biotic tested negative for Amoxicillin while the company had claimed that it contains 500 milligram of Amoxicillin.
The drug, Maximizane 625 milligram, along with several other drugs were chosen in random sampling for laboratory testing by the Drug Controller Kashmir during winter. The drugs were sent to the laboratory for testing and the anti-biotic tested negative as the laboratory report revealed that it contains “NIL” Amoxicillin. The drug contained Zero milligrams of Amoxicillin tri-hydrate while the company claims that it contains 500 milligrams of Amoxicillin tri-hydrate + 125 milligrams clavulanic acid.
Following the expose and outcry across the State, the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad sent an 11-member team from the CDSCO to the Jammu and Kashmir to investigate the quality of drugs being supplied to the Government run hospitals and those available in the open market.
A team of experts from CDSCO headed by Deputy Drug Controller (North Zone) Dr K Bangarurajan visited various hospitals of the State and collected samples of 131 drugs as part of the investigation ordered by the Union Health Ministry into the spurious drug scam.
In the meantime the Assistant Solicitor General of India (ASGI), S A Makroo today filed status report of the CDSCO before the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
Makroo told the court that the CDSCO has received samples of 25 drugs and two of them were found spurious.
The Division bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Yaqub Mir while hearing the case, directed the ASGI to update the status report before the next date of hearing of the case on July 12.
The Advocate General of the State, Mohammad Ishaq Qadri, sought 4 weeks time from the court as the Government has to accord sanction for the prosecution of the government employees who are involved in the drug scam.
Qadri told the court that the State has filed its status report in which it is mentioned that 25 persons were challaned in the drug scam case. He told the court that six persons have not yet responded to the charge-sheet.
