New Delhi, Aug 2:
The International Olympic Committee today confirmed that the IOA’s Extraordinary General Meeting will be held on August 25 and also named two of its members who will be attending the meet to pave the way for India’s return to Olympic fold.
“It is our understanding that the (Extraordinary General) meeting will take place on 25 August 2013 (within the time frame indicated in my letter of 6 July),” IOC Director General, Christophe De Kepper wrote in his letter, dated August 2, 2013.
“Consequently we take note of this date and we are pleased to confirm that the IOC will attend this Extraordinary General Meeting on 25 August and will be represented by the IOC Honorary Member Mr Francisco J Elizalde who will be accompanied by Mr Jerome Poivey, Head of Institutional Relations at the IOC NOC Relations Department,” he added.
The Indian Olympic Association was banned last year by IOC for not following the IOC Charter while conducting its elections.
The IOC Director General also said that the international body had no problem with the proposed date for the holding of the IOA’s Elective General Meeting on September 29.
“The IOC has no objection with respect to the date proposed for the holding of the Elective General Meeting on 29 September 2013,” the letter stated.
The IOC once again conveyed to the IOA that it would send its comments on the new Constitution by the mid of August.
“I wish to remind you that the IOC will send all its comments on the new IOA Constitution by mid-August (as mentioned in my letters of 28 June and 6 July).”
The IOC had initially set a July 15 deadline for the amendment of the IOA Constitution so that elections could be held by September 1.
But the IOC, in a letter dated July 6, 2013, told the IOA that it would be able to send its comments on the new IOA Constitution only by mid-August, hence delaying the entire process by a month. (PTI)
