Lecture on weed management held at SKUAST

JAMMU, Aug 19: A two days student activity in Faculty of Agriculture, Main Campus, SKUAST-J, Chatha was organized under the aegis of Indian Society of weed science  and Directorate of weed Science (ICAR) in collaboration with the Division of Agronomy to show the visibility of society wherein guest lectures and weed quiz  activities were taken up to make about 50 students and 20 scientists aware of  the challenges in future weed management for food security and abuses of Congress grass (Parthenium) which have created havoc throughout the country vis-a-vis  reduction in crop productivity , imposing health hazards and reducing the land resource value.
A team of experts  of SKUAST  Jammu comprising of Dr. Anil Kumar , Dr. B. C. Sharma and Dr. Dileep Kachroo,   Dr. Jai Kumar, Ms. Neetu Sharma and Mr. Parshotam. K. Sharma along with Dean Faculty of Agriculture Dr. J.P. Sharma appraised the students and faculty members about the importance of weed management in present day agriculture.
The deliberations included the physical, chemical, biological and integrated management of this dreaded spp. which is a major threat to biodiversity.
Besides the guest lecture , a weed quiz about principle of weed management and abuses of Parthenium was conducted by  Mrs. Neetu Sharma.  Ms. Arpita Sharma and Dr. Jai Kumar with five teams in the context. The Team Parthenium stood first in quiz competition. The students and other participants exhibited great enthusiasm and zest in learning about weed management which if done properly can help the country get rid of food commodity deficits owing to burgeoning population explosion and only with the help of weed management country can produce a record food grain production at the moment amounting to about 350 million tones.
