Taj announces Sher -i- Kashmir awards on National Sports Day

SRINAGAR, Aug 29: On the eve of National Sports Day, Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services & Sports, Taj Mohi-ud-Din today announced the names of winners of Sher-i-Kashmir awards in different categories for 2010-11 and 2011-12 here today. The awards would be given to these winners on December 5, the birthday of late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister enumerated the steps taken to strengthen sports infrastructure in the State. He said the Government under the leadership of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is giving sports a renewed thrust and a network of stadia and sports fields is being created.
Mr. Taj said  Rs 18 crore  Indoor  Stadium is being constructed at Baramulla besides an astro turf laden football ground there. He said indoor stadium at Srinagar is being given a new look while as foundation for an indoor stadium at Jammu has been laid.
The winners of Sher -i -Kashmir awards include   Atul Pangotra in Taekwondo and  Ishfaq Hussain Kand in Kayaking and Canoeing who were awarded II-Gold and Rs. 30,000 for shinning at International level.
Arjun Gandotra in Roller Skating, Mohammad Saud Bhat in Taekwando,  Devinder Pal Singh in Roller Skating,  Phuntsog Yangdon in Skiing, who were awarded II-Silver and awarded Rs. 25,000 for their extra ordinary efforts.
Major Vikram Singh Jamwal in Fencing,  Masooda Akhter in Skiing,  Brinder Singh in Taekwondo, Arjun Gupta in Taekwondo who were awarded  III-Bronze and awarded Rs. 22,000 for their talent.
Kapil Pangotra in Taekwondo, Adil Mohi-ud-Din Bhat in Kayaking and Canoeing Harish Kumar in Powerlifting,  Preet Dutta in Powerlifting, Yasmeena Akhter in Skiing,  Arushi Kotwal in Chess,  Shaurya Bali in Equestrian, Arjun Singh Charak in Wushu, Lalit Singh in Wushu and Zaheer Abbass Khan in Taekwondo who were awarded consolation prize of Rs. 20,000 for their extra-ordinary talent.
On the occasion, players presented demonstrations of Thangtha, swords and Wushu games to the delight of the audience.
MLA, Hazratbal, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, Secretary, Youth Services & Sports,  Parvez Malik, Secretary, State Sports Council, Dileep Thusu, joint director, Youth Services & Sports,  Nilofer, representatives of various sports organizations including S. Channi Singh and other sports lovers were present on the occasion.
Later, the Minister watched the final of Inter District Under 19 Football Tournaments organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports and distributed prizes among the winners.
