Fuel price: Opp raises uproar in RS; demands discussion

NEW DELHI, Sept 2:  The Opposition parties today created an uproar in the Rajya Sabha on the steep Rs 2.35 a litre hike in petrol price and 50 paisa a litre increase in cost of diesel, demanding a rollback of the decision and dicussion on the issue.
The uproar over the issue led to a brief adjournment of the  House during the Zero Hour.
The Upper House was adjourned for 15 minutes till 1123 hrs  after Derek O’Brien of Trinamool Congress raised the issue soon after the House met for the say. He said the fuel price issue  should be discussed first as it concerns the people of the  country.
Despite Chairman Hamid Ansari saying that the issue had  been listed for Zero Hour, the Trinamool Congress members  continued to press for a discussion on the issue.
Mr Derek said the decision on raising petrol and diesel  prices was announced outside the House though Parliament was in session which amounted to overriding the House.
Supporting him, M Venkaiah Naidu (BJP) said besides the fuel price hike, the proposal to shut petrol pumps during night too  needs to be discussed.
With members persisting with their demand, Dr Ansari adjourned the House for 15 minutes till 1123.
