JAMMU, Aug 2: The Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu today organized a one-day workshop on “Gender Sensitization” for the students of the MA Rural Department.
Dr. Kavita Suri, Director, Department of Lifelong Learning who is also a former member, Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for the Protection of Women and Child Right, J&K Govt, and Dr Savita Nayyar, Associate Professor, Department of Law, were the key resource persons during the workshop.
The workshop was conducted by Assistant Prof Dr Bharti Prabhakar. The other faculty members present in the workshop were Dr Priyanka Sharma, Dr Vivek Sharma, Dr Pallavi Sachdeva and Dr Sandeep Singh.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Suri apprised the students that gender is an important consideration in development. She said it is a way of looking at how social norms and power structures impact the lives of people.
She made a detailed power point presentation on “Understanding Gender” and explained that a person’s gender identity can correspond to or differ from the sex as later is assigned at birth. She also showed video clips and discussed different themes related to that.
Dr Savita Nayyar spoke on “Gender sensitization with special reference to sexual harassment and domestic violence” with special focus on the legal framework concerning rights of the women and various treaties and conventions available for them. Dr Nayyar spoke on the issues of safety, violence and gender justice in our society. She also discussed various cases and practical examples to create sensitization about gender issues.
Both the sessions were followed by discussion and meaningful interventions made by students and other faculty members of the department.
