JODHPUR, Oct 1: The Rajasthan High Court today denied bail to self-styled godman Asaram in the infamous case of sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl.
The Single Judge Bench of Nirmaljit Kaur delivered the order rejecting the accused preacher’s bail application.
Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani had argued for the accused, seeking his release on bail, on September 18 but the court demanded some documentary evidence for supporting his pleadings for which the petitioner was allowed time till today.
As per the case history, the victim–a 16-year-old student of the accused spiritual leader’s Chindwara gurukul ashram– was allegedly sexually assaulted by him in his Manai ashram here on the night of August 15.
The victim had lodged an FIR in this connection against the ‘godman’ on August 20 at Kamla Market police station in Delhi that was later referred to Jodhpur for formal lodging of the case and investigation here.
Asaram was arrested from his ashram in Indore on the night of August 31 and brought here the next day and since then he is behind the bars.
District and Sessions Court(Jodhpur Rural) yesterday remanded him in judicial custody till October 11.
His two close aides and co-accused in the case–Chindwara gurukul warden Shilpi and sevadar Shiva-are also under the judicial custody in the case.
