AWANTIPORA, Sept 19: The four-day 7-A-Side Inter-departmental Football tournament commenced at IUST, here today.
The event organized by The Directorate of Physical Education & Sports, IUST will culminate on September 22. The tournament was inaugurated by Prof Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor of the University as chief guest of the event.
Eight departments of the University are participating in the tournament. Congratulating the Directorate of Sports for organizing this tournament, Prof. Romshoo said “Sports is equally important as academics. More important than a loss or a win in a game, is the team spirit and coordination that it teaches. Such sports also help to develop a sense of leadership among the students.”
He assured that IUST will devote more space and infrastructure to the physical education of the youth.
Encouraging the players, Prof. Manzoor A Malik, Dean Academics said, “Minds work sharper in a healthy body and sports are indispensable for healthy education”. He recommended organizing more sports events on campus.
Welcoming the players Dr. Hilal Ahmad Rather (Assistant Director, Physical Education & Sports) said, “Sports help to build a foundation for lifelong health and also help to form social and community bonds. So, we at IUST are devoted to enhancing sports culture”.
The inaugural function was also attended by Sameer Wazir, Finance Officer/ Chairman Sports Committee, Prof. M A Khuroo and Majid Nazir Mukhdoomi.
