Srinagar, Oct 1: The residents of old town Baramulla today staged a protest against the PDD for installing smart electricity meters in the area.
In this regard, the women of the area came out on the roads and were seen raising slogans against the authorities demanding that instead of installing meters, people should be asked to pay a monthly fee per consumption.
“We are poor people, our men are laborers; they earn during the day and feed the families at night; how are we going to pay huge bills which would be generated after the installation of the smart meters,” the residents said.
They said that when they cannot even afford to send their children to private schools, how are they going to pay the electricity bills? “A flat rate needs to be imposed as per the consumption of the electricity, rather than installing the meters,” they said.
The residents urged the authorities to look into the matter and take the necessary steps to provide them respite.
