HIRANAGAR (Kathua), Nov 7: Girdhari Lal Dogra Memorial Govt. Degree College Hiranagar organized a poster making and paper reading competition on ‘Scientific Interventions & Food Security in the Hinterlands’, here today.
The programme was sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, India Chapter Jammu. Chief guest of the occasion was Prof RN Gohil, Secretary, NSAI, Jammu Chapter. Prof Manoj K Dhar, former Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu was the guest of honour and special guest was JU’s Prof Susheel Verma.
The welcome address was presented by Dr. Pragya Khanna, Principal of the College. She highlighted the need to have scientific interventions to address the growing needs of food.
Prof. Neha Bhagat organizing secretary and Head Department of Environmental Sciences enlightened the audience on the need to organize such a program.
Prof Manoj Dhar in his address said that scientific knowledge and interventions is the key to meeting the issue of food scarcity. He advocated that biotechnology and genetic engineering at different levels could be employed to enhance food productivity, while Prof. Susheel Sharma said that India’s position in the global hunger index is a worrisome state.
Prof Gohil enlightened the gathering about the works and programmes of the NSAI which is an oldest society of the country which was established 92 years ago. The society now has 21 Chapters spanning across the nation.
Dr. Pragya Khanna said the availability of food is not sufficient but substituted it with the availability of balanced nutrition. He supplemented the idea of a balanced diet with the example of buckwheat.
Earlier, the programme began with the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries and by the presentation of Sarswati Vandana by the students of music. The competition was judged by Prof. Gurdyal, HoD Geography, Dr. Rajesh Sharma and Prof. Arun Kumar HoD Chemistry.
Surishti Khajuria of HS Gurha Mundian, Garima Sharma of HSS Hiranagar and Hari Priya of HSS Hiranagar secured first, second and third positions respectively in poster making competition. In the paper reading competition Muskan of GCW Kathua, Anu of GDC Ramkot, and Aabha of GCW Kathua bagged first, second and third positions respectively.
