We hail the latest judgment pronounced by Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar of J&K High Court, Jammu directing the Central Government and the Chief Election Commissioner to act tough against the politicians invoking religious nationalism for seeking vote favor. The judgment said that in our constitutional philosophy, there is only one “ism” that is “Indianism”. Any person claiming to be Hindu nationalist, Muslim nationalist, Sikh nationalist, Buddhist nationalist or Christian nationalist, is not only working against ” Indianism” but against very thought of India. Stern action should be taken against politicians/ruling Government for appeasement politics in favour of a particular caste, community or religion in showering favours for vote bank policy.
It is urged upon Chief Election Commission to implement the true spirit behind the historical judgment in letter and spirit so that vested interests face a death blow in divisive politics. The judgment has further asked the CEC to consider for issuance of instructions for disqualifying of such persons from contesting the elections to Parliament and State Assemblies who try to invoke religious sentiments or nationalism.
It is hoped that political parties henceforth do not resort to appeasement politics in favour of a particular caste, community or religion in showering favours for vote bank policy. It is appealed to the general masses to read the writings on the wall; take strong note of corruption, unprecedented price rise, scandals, adulteration, un-employment etc let loose by the ruling political parties and do not fall into their trap of “religionism”.

This has reference to: “Act against politicians invoking religious nationalism: HC to Centre,”DE, Oct 12. Among other things the Jammu and Kashmir High Court of Judicature says: “In the constitutional philosophy there is only one “ism” that is Indianism.All other “isms” are sworn enemies of Indianism.”
It is generally agreed that the term “Hindu “was used by the Persians, by the Greeks who reached the Indus river along with Alexander the Greek, and by other people of that region to designate the people living beyond the Indus ( Sindhu) river. Thus the term Hindu was applied to all people living on the Indian subcontinent.
There is, however, no indication that Hindus were united by one common religion. On the contrary, early Persian sources make reference to various currents among Hindus; earlier sources mention forty-two, while the later ones speak of at least four. Magasthenes, the Greek and the Chinese pilgrims Huen Saeng and Feignen of the first millennium after Jesus Christ refer to two main religious categories: Brahmans and the Shramans. The Shramans included Buddhists, Jains, and a number of other sects.
In none of the scriptural and semi-scriptural books is the term “Hindu” used to describe a particular religion. In the Sanskrit language the term “Hindu” does not seem to occur at all. Neither do the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Shrimad Bhagvad-Gita, the Smiritis nor the Puranas ever talk of a Hindu religion. The Bhakti poets speak of Bhagvad Dharma but never of a Hindu Dharma. To describe different religions appropriate term was used: Saiva, Vaisnava, Jains, etc. It is doubtful whether before the colonial era anyone ever spoke of “Hinduism” as religion.
The word “Hinduism” is not a term which any religion in India applies to itself, but something which Europeans have invented. The word was meant to designate the religion of the Hindus. Unfortunately, the people who invented this concept did not know much enough about Hindus. They discovered too late that Hindus have many religions. Hinduism is considered as one of the great world religions. Today we realize, though we find it difficult to admit, that the Hindu religion is a plant which has artificially been cultivated by European scholars—a plant which is much too beautiful to be thrown away; still, it is inartificial plant, in nature it does not exist.
