JAMMU, Dec 9: Leading a delegation of aggrieved students, RTI activist S Balvinder Singh met Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to Lt Governor JK UT and urged him to enhance the GNM lateral entry quota from 20 percent to 50 percent with the rider that the seats remaining vacant after counseling in either quota are shifted to exhausted quota so that maximum candidates are given admission.
He explained that since the number of candidates from the direct entry quota are very low, more than 60 percent of the seats remain vacant in all the private colleges of JK UT.
Singh further brought it to the notice of the Advisor that before the abrogation of Article 370, the criteria for the admission in colleges was comparatively very easy but the entry of BOPEE has made the admission process very complicated.
“The process of admission before August 5, 2019 was that even those students who have had scored 55 percent could easily get into college and now the condition is that even the brilliant students with 75 percent could not get admissions in college,” he said, adding that the reason behind all this is the pre-requisites of BOPEE which is very unnecessary and even the concerned authority have no explanation to this crisis.
Balvinder Singh said that Private colleges have vacant seats due the pre conditions of BOPEE which is unnecessary and the same has not been explained satisfactorily. Further, he added, the students from Ladakh are the worst affected in the ongoing situation.
“Before August 5, 2019, the students from Ladakh were eligible for the lateral entry but now after the abrogation of Article 370, they have faced a lot of distress and harassment in terms of administration,” he said and requested to entertain the students from Ladakh as well for the lateral entry admission in private college here in Jammu.
Earlier, these aggrieved students, aspirants for GNM courses, blocked road near Bahu Plaza and then gheroed BOPEE office. They were demanding more quota for the lateral entry GNM aspirants.
