JAMMU, Jan 8: Ace fencer of Jammu and Kashmir, Shreya Gupta gave an excellent display of fencing in the World Cup held at Budapest in Hungary from January 7 to 8, wherein she reached the knockout stage after winning pool matches.
In the pool matches, she defeated Hungary fencer by 5-3, France fencer by 5-4 and also defeated Romanian fencer by 5-1 in one sided match. The other women fencers from India including Kritarthi Kotwal of J&K, Baby Reddy and Gauri of Telangana failed to qualify the pools besides giving their best efforts.
In the men’s individual matches, only Yuvraj, Laishram Morabba and Yuvi Walia could qualify the pools thereby reached knockout stage whereas other contenders including Lakshaya Sharama, Mayank Sharma and Suryansh Sharma from J&K gave their competitive performance but could not qualify for the knockout stage.
Shreya Gupta is receiving training at Budapest, Hungary for the last three months under ‘Target Olympic Podium Scheme’ (TOPS) of Govt. of India, was the only women sabre fencer from India to clear the pools in individual matches and reached knockout stage.
President, J&K Amateur Fencing Association, MJ Sharma congratulated Shreya for coming up with splendid performance and hoped that she will win medals for the country and J&K in future at international and national events.
