Taiwan says export value edges down in first 3 weeks of October

TAIPEI, Oct 30:  Taiwan’s exports in the first three weeks of October were slightly lower in value year-on-year, the finance minister said on Wednesday, pointing to a slow recovery of global economy.

Taiwan, home to some of the world’s largest chipmakers  and contract tablet and notebook PCs makers, relies on China and the United States as its top two markets.

With demand for the traditional year-end shopping season softening, Taiwan’s hope for a strong fourth-quarter season is diminishing.

‘Export value was up in one week and down in another week. It added up to a negative in the first three weeks,’ finance minister Chang Sheng-ford told reporters on the sidelines of a parliament session.

Taiwan’s exports fell an unexpected 7 percent  year-on-year in September, with shipments to China and the U.S. Dropping significantly.

Still, the ministry maintains its expectation for a 2013 full-year growth in export value.
