SRINAGAR, Jan 22: The accumulated snow in the main market Shopian and several other areas is yet to be cleared by the Municipal Committee (MC) Shopian due to which the commuters, as well as the traders, are facing a tough time, while the authorities state that the roads are motorable and that the snowfall which the district received is meagre.
The locals told Excelsior that the officials of the MC Shopian have not even bothered to depute the men and machinery to clear the accumulated snow due to which, they said, the pedestrians are facing issues while the business of the traders is taking a hit.
“There is no one to take cognizance of the matter; ideally soon after the accumulation of the snow, they should have reached the spot to clear the same; but we are just waiting,” said Nazir Ahmad, one of the traders.
The traders said that they are now, on their own, clearing the accumulated snow wherever they can, “rest is lying there; craving the attention of the MC authorities who do not seem to be showing any concern about it.”
The residents also identified several other spots where the accumulated snow has not been, so far, cleared. The spots where there is a need for clearing the accumulated snow include Jamia Masjid, Batapora Chowk, Bonbazar, Tak Masjid road, Buthoo Chowk and Goal Chowk.
The Executive Officer MC Shopian, Suhail Malik, told Excelsior that the depth of the snow is quite meagre and that if the snow clearance machines are put to the job; those will end up damaging the roads.
“It is quite meagre snowfall for a place like Shopian; we had initially one foot of snow which was cleared from the roads and then we have a few inches and even today we have just a few inches. The roads are motorable; if anyone has any concern regarding a particular spot, they can contact us,” he said.
