JAMMU, Nov 7: Former Minister and State president of NCP, Thakur Randhir Singh has demanded immediate and unconditional release of arrested workers of Chenani-Nashri tunnel project besides strict action against the policemen responsible for the lathicharge on the workers who were protesting for their rights.
Talking to media persons on his return from the Udhampur Jail where several NCP activists and the labour union member have been lodged following protest against Leighton Welspun, Thakur Randhir Singh alleged that an atmosphere of fear and harassment was created by the police to suppress the poor workers who are only demanding implementation of labour laws.
Mr Singh demanded abolishment of subcontractor system and stressed for direct payment to the labour by the company. He also demanded that a special monitoring committee comprising of representatives of labour unions, social workers and experts should be constituted to monitor the working conditions of the labourers, their transport, housing, medical facilities etc.
The NCP leader suggested that real owner of the company, who is foreigner, must visit this project and change the existing management besides taking action against those who are encouraging subcontractors.
The NCP leader was accompanied by Kamal Gupta, R S Billowaria, Sudershan Choudhary, Gourav Kapoor, Mohinder Singh Thakur, Bansi Lal Sodhi, Col Amar Singh, R C Bali, Tariq Nar, Jaswant Singh Rakwal and Ashok Singh.
