JAMMU, Dec 18: Emphasizing on the need to provide free education to all children in the State, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand today said Education Department is ready with the law to enable every child in the age group of four to fourteen years with the right to free and compulsory education till completion of elementary education.
“After having thorough discussions and taking suggestions from different stakeholders, the draft is ready and very soon the same would be put before Cabinet for approval,” he added.
He said the State law has gone beyond the Central provisions and special provisions for children from weaker sections of the society have been made.
Tara Chand was addressing a gathering at the Government Degree College, Khour.
On the occasion scholarships worth Rs. 2,41,000 were distributed and sweaters were given to over 40 boys and 20 girl students.
Calling upon students to avail benefits extended by the Government, the Deputy Chief Minister said steps have been taken to upgrade education infrastructure in the area and a Degree College has starting operating, adding that the college has been a boon for the rural students.
He said soon the college would have its own campus and students can have better facilities at par with those available in city colleges. Teacher fraternity is back bone of the education system and all efforts have been made to address their long pending demands, he added.
“After taking charge of the Ministry over 22000 promotions have been made and very soon Class IV employees would also be given due promotions,” he added.
Tara Chand said exemplary development initiatives taken in rural and border belts have resulted in creating better infrastructure and the block is at top in the country with respect to road connectivity.
ReT pattern recruitment and opening of new schools has helped the education scenario and students have been able to get quality education at a place near their home, he added.
Principal, Degree College P.K. Sharma, Principal, Higher Secondary School and other officers of revenue, block and line departments attended the event.
