Srinagar Aug 28: The High-Density Apple Plantation scheme is reshaping the fortunes of Kashmiri farmers, with the latest success story being that of Mushtaq Ahmad from Wadipora area of Budgam in central Kashmir, whose income has doubled since he switched to high-density apple farming.
Forty-year-old Mushtaq, who previously struggled with meagre returns from almond plantation, switched to high-density apple after field officers from the Department of Horticulture recommended the shift.
They invited him to awareness camps and emphasised the potential for doubling his income. To make this transition successful, Mushtaq invested in water infrastructure, including digging a borewell and creating a reservoir.
“If we compare it with the almond trees, which used to yield nothing, these varieties give ten times more crop than our traditional varieties like Delicious or Kulu Delicious. The rates tend to fluctuate on a regular basis, but the production is good,” he said.
Mushtaq credited his successful orchard establishment to the support and training provided by the horticulture department. Today, he not only manages the orchard himself but also provides employment to 15–20 people. The fruit trees were sourced from Delhi, and his orchard boasts 32 varieties.
Encouraging young people to explore opportunities in horticulture and agriculture, Mushtaq shared his journey of attending training programmes and seeking guidance from various departments. He emphasised the importance of nutrition management in horticulture and urged others to connect with the department for guidance.
Notably, Mushtaq now owns 150 kanals of orchard land, yielding around 6,000 crates of delicious apples. He highlighted the higher prices, production, and demand for these varieties.
However, Mushtaq also pointed out a significant challenge faced by growers. He said the closure of the highway during certain times, which can lead to damage to the fruit crop during transportation. He urged the government to facilitate the movement of apple trucks, drawing parallels with the mechanisms in place for army convoys and yatra buses.
